BROWSERS & THE WWW

This website can be viewed using many Web browsers but you may see problems if you view this site using Microsoft's Internet Explorer. All the other browsers such as Firefox on Windows, Mac, Linux and other UNIX platforms, Safari on Mac and Opera on Windows & Mac are fine. They have excellent support for the current international web standards defined by the World Wide Web Consortium. Microsoft's IE however has not kept up with or not followed the standards, particularly for Cascading Style Sheets. It has become increasingly difficult to support IE.

ABOUT THIS SITE

This website was originally designed by Eden Law for the Society's web site in January 2003. It replaced a quite plain design which we had for some years. The code was extensively modified by Michael Lake to use a template based production system, make greater use of CSS stylesheets, replacing table layout with divisions, and some changes to the layout and appearance.

The Web pages are maintained using the gvim editor, Template Toolkit, and some Perl scripting on a Debian Linux/GNU operating system. Checking of the pages is done with the Firefox web browser on Linux and Windows and Apple's Safari browser on a Macintosh.

This page has been designed to be as friendly as possible to text based browsers such as Lynx and w3m so that those who are visually impaired can read our web pages. Suggestions for this Web page are welcomed.

The Society would like to thank the following people who have contributed material to this web site: Dr Richard Evans, Dr David F. Branagan. Particular thanks goes to Dr Evans who scanned over 30 years of journals, converted the scans to text, formatted them to HTML pages, and made the pages available to the Society.
